WinterSim 2002: MODELING SIGNAL LATENCY EFFECTS USING ARENA

Recent military operations have showcased the abilities of
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly in their
ability to effectively perform those tasks too dangerous for
manned aircraft. We examine non-autonomous operations
of an UAV in those instances where the vehicle is used for
laser target designation in support of precision guided munitions
with non-line-of-sight command and control of the
UAV. Non-line of sight UAV control requires a satellite
communications link which involves a level of signal delay,
or signal latency. This latency may impact the accuracy
of the laser designation and thus the accuracy of the
guided weapon. A simulation model is defined, built, and
used to address the signal latency impacts of our defined
UAV targeting scenario.

WinterSim 2001: THE USE OF SIMULATION FOR PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AT AN AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER

This work has for objective building a simulation model to
evaluate different alternatives of operation of a projected
center for ambulatory surgery. For the construction of the
model a group of pathologies was selected and real data
was taken from statistics of surgeries from a clinical hospital.
The information was supplemented by the opinion of
medical surgeons and expert anesthesiologists. Similarly,
the model was validated by means of the opinion of experts
and implemented with the Arena simulation software. Different
configurations of operating conditions were studied.
It is concluded that the maximum throughput of daily surgeries
is achieved, 10 in total, dedicating two beds to
preparation of patient, five beds to the transitory hospitalization
and using an LPT scheduling rule in the operating
rooms, i.e., the heaviest surgeries first.

WinterSim 2001: USING AUTOMATION FOR FINISHING ROOM CAPACITY PLANNING

Capacity planning of a furniture finishing system using
both deterministic analysis and stochastic simulation is
conveniently performed with the aid ActiveX Automation.
Users interactively build a complete model of a finishing
system with an Excel interface, which creates a deterministic
model. The spreadsheet de-couples data input from the
simulation model construction and execution, and provides
a user-friendly tool for analyzing a finishing system. Using
the spreadsheet, simulation data is provided to the deterministic
model, and an Arena simulation model and
animation of individual finishing line operations is constructed
through ActiveX automation. A manufacturing
manager unfamiliar with modeling techniques can use the
interface to plan the finishing system and conduct simulation
experiments with various input parameters such as line
loading techniques, operations balancing, and line speeds.
Through the interface, results from the simulation can be
used in an iterative process to analyze and refine design parameters
of the finishing line.

WinterSim 2001: UNDERSTANDING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF KANBAN AND CONWIP PULL SYSTEMS USING SIMULATION

This paper presents an introductory overview and tutorial in
simulation modeling and control of serial Kanban and
CONWIP (CONstant Work In Process) pull systems using
ARENA/SIMAN 3.5/4.0. Card level estimation is discussed
for both types of pull systems, and a heuristic method to
adjust card levels controlling system WIP (Work In Process)
is provided. The objective is to present a tutorial for students
and practicing engineers familiar with the basics of
simulation, but unfamiliar with pull system fundamentals

WinterSim 2001: A CAPACITY PLANNING TOOL FOR THE TUXEDO MIDDLEWARE

In this paper, we present a brief overview of Tuxedo middleware
system (BEA Systems) and introduce an objectoriented
computer simulation template developed for the
purpose of capacity planning and performance analysis of
Tuxedo application environments. Arena/Siman (Rockwell
Software) simulation software is chosen and a
CP_Tool template specific to Tuxedo environment is developed.
The template consists of a number of modules
representing client and server nodes, network nodes and
other critical components of the system. Any Tuxedo environment
can be created using the modules from the
CP_Tool. The paper discusses the tool and its capabilities.
